Two families of MSI laptop
MSI builds for two crowds, and we see both in Kensington. The gaming side runs from the GT Titan and GS Stealth through the GE Raider, GP Leopard and GL Leopard to the GF Thin, Alpha and Bravo series. The working side covers the Creator, Prestige, Summit and Modern laptops, plus the WS, WT and Vortex workstations.
The faults differ. Gaming models come in with heat and graphics trouble. Creator and workstation models more often arrive with a broken screen, a tired battery or a deadline.
Graphics faults, heat and crashes
Vertical or horizontal lines on the screen, a display that stays blank after booting and a laptop that keeps restarting can all trace back to the NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. They can also be a damaged panel or cable. We connect an external monitor to tell the two apart before recommending a repair.
Overheating is behind many of these failures. Thin gaming laptops have very little room for cooling, and dust does the rest. A proper strip-down and clean costs £135 + VAT to £165 + VAT as a guide. We can also tune a gaming laptop’s performance so that your sessions stop being interrupted.
The less dramatic problems
- Laptop won’t turn on or won’t boot
- Battery not charging, or draining quickly
- Error messages on a blue screen
- Camera not working in Windows
- No sound when playing music
- Keyboard not responding
- Laptop running slowly
- Broken screen
Parts we replace and upgrade
On the hardware side we repair and replace motherboards, screens, keyboards, DC power jacks and optical drives, and clean up after liquid spills. Damaged parts are replaced with high-quality genuine ones. For more speed or space we fit SSDs, larger hard drives and extra memory, and we remove viruses, adware and spyware.
Software corruption and accidentally deleted files are covered too. See laptop data recovery for how we retrieve data from hard drives and SSDs.
